From 2nd April 2007, most individuals applying for indefinite leave to remain in the United Kingdom are required to demonstrate their fluency in English and pass a “Life in the UK” exam. See the Home Office web site for details regarding this change in the immigration rules.
The requirements for further leave to remain in the United Kingdom on the grounds of length of residence are set out in paragraph 276B of HC395.
On 1st April 2003 paragraphs 276A-D of the Immigration Rules was introduced to reflect the previous Ministerial statment concerning the question of 'normally regularising the immigration status of those who can demonstrate 10 years continuous lawful residence or who have resided in the United Kingdom for 14 years or more either lawfully or unlawfully.
